Letting the underpainting show through

| The first stroke you make on a canvas is always perfect. It's the second stroke and all subsequent strokes that can ruin everything. Sometimes the hardest thing to do is simply leave a painting alone. Here I enjoyed some happy color and texture accidents in the initial lay-in. As I finished the work I decided it would be a poor idea if I covered all that lovely under painting completely. This close-up shows areas around the head with nothing more than the initial stain of color on the canvas. Perhaps the viewer will think I ran out of paint. |
